A face cropped tight to the edges of the canvas and built from planes of orange, yellow, violet and white, with a cigar clamped in the mouth and a dark beard and brow anchoring all that colour. Michele lays the paint down in flat decisive patches rather than blending, so the likeness assembles itself as you step back from it. One of her larger canvases at 100 by 70cm, and it reads clearly across a room.
