Dozens of standing figures fill the canvas, each wrapped in a pale blanket and holding a tall staff, arranged in loose rows that recede without ever settling into a horizon. Artur paints the whole thing in greys, white and black, so the crowd reads as pattern first and as people second. Dark bands cut across at intervals and hold the composition together. Quite unlike his landscapes, and one of the most unusual works here.
