Portuguese Doors
Artur Rama was born in Canas de Senhorim in central Portugal and returned there in 2021. These are the doors of the village he lives in: painted timber set into a whitewashed wall, a numbered tile beside the frame, an iron pull worn smooth.

They are not really paintings of doors. Artur builds the panels, the frame and the doorstep out of recycled wood so they stand proud of the surface, then dry-brushes the whitewash back until the grain shows through. On a wall they catch a shadow in a way a flat canvas cannot.
There are three. Number 9 Blue and Number 9 Red are a pair at around 16cm wide, one with a four-pane window of painted birds, the other with four raised diamond panels. Number 27 is the largest at 30 by 52cm, a bright yellow door with rust-coloured bars across two tall slot windows.
