Artur Rama paints the country he lives in. Idyllic Mountainside is a Portuguese hillside village seen from the top of the hill down, terracotta roofs stacked among orange and blue trees, a white church at the centre and windmills on the far ridge. It is the largest and most detailed work in the collection at 75 by 95cm, and every roof tile and window frame is in it.

A Lonely Bridge is the quieter one. A single stone arch carries an old road over still water, its curve completed by the reflection underneath, and the brick and lime are painted repair by repair.
Pamela Cooper's Reflection is the one inland piece among her coastal work, green and ochre hills above a shallow pool, worked mostly with a knife rather than a brush so the ridges catch the light.
