More about Artur Rama

Artur Rama paints the country he lives in. Idyllic Mountainside is a Portuguese hillside village seen from the top of the hill down, terracotta roofs stacked among orange and blue trees, a white church at the centre and windmills on the far ridge. At 75 by 95cm there is room for every roof tile and window frame, and he puts them all in.

A Lonely Bridge is the quieter one. A single stone arch carries an old road over still water, its curve completed by the reflection underneath, the brick and lime painted repair by repair.
