Portuguese Doors

Not really paintings of doors. The panels, the frame and the doorstep are built out of recycled wood so they stand proud of the surface, then the whitewash is dry-brushed back until the grain shows through. On a wall they catch a shadow in a way a flat canvas cannot.

More about Artur Rama

Artur Rama was born in Canas de Senhorim in central Portugal and returned there in 2021. These are the doors of the village he lives in: painted timber set into a whitewashed wall, a numbered tile beside the frame, an iron pull worn smooth.

Number 9 Blue and Number 9 Red were made as a pair at around 16cm wide, one with a four-pane window of painted birds, the other with four raised diamond panels. Number 27 is a bright yellow door at 30 by 52cm, with rust-coloured bars across two tall slot windows.
